Indications

  • Pneumonia (moderate to severe)
  • Febrile Neutropenia
  • Uncomplicated and Complicated Urinary Tract Infections
  • Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections
  • Complicated Intra-abdominal Infections

Pharmacology

  • Bactericidal
  • Disrupts peptidoglycan layer
  • Same mode of action as other beta-lactam antibiotics

Dosage & Administration

  • Administered intravenously over approximately 30 minutes
  • Different dosages for different infections

Interaction

  • Renal function monitoring for aminoglycosides
  • Nephrotoxicity potential with high doses of aminoglycosides

Contraindications

  • Immediate hypersensitivity reactions to cefepime or cephalosporin class of antibiotics

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B
  • Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed
  • Excreted in human breast milk in very low concentrations

Precautions & Warnings

  • Prescribing in the absence of proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection unlikely to provide benefit
  • Prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible microorganisms
  • Associated with a fall in prothrombin activity

Use in Special Populations

  • Pediatric Use (2 months up to 16 years)
  • Maximum dose for pediatric patients should not exceed recommended adult dose
  • Serious adverse events in geriatric patients with renal insufficiency
  • Dose adjustment for patients with impaired renal function

Overdose Effects

  • Careful observation and supportive treatment for patients who receive an overdose
  • Recommended hemodialysis in the presence of renal insufficiency
