Medicine Details

Bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis

Adults:
- 500 mg to 1 gm by intravenous administration every 8 hours
- Up to 2 gm for cystic fibrosis
- 2 gm for meningitis
Children:
- 10 to 40 mg/kg intravenously every 8 hours
- 20 mg/kg for intra-abdominal infections
- 25-40 mg/kg for cystic fibrosis (4-18 years)
- 40 mg/kg for meningitis
- 20 mg/kg for febrile neutropenia
- Use adult dosage for children over 50 kg weight
- No experience in children with hepatic or renal impairment

Intravenous infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes or as intravenous bolus over approximately 3-5 minutes

Probenecid competes with Aronem for active tubular secretion, may reduce serum valproic acid levels

Hypersensitivity to the product

Pregnancy Category B, caution when administered to a nursing woman

Discontinue in case of allergic reaction, careful monitoring in patients with hepatic disease

Dosage reduction in patients with creatinine clearance less than 51 ml/min
No dosage adjustments necessary in elderly patients unless creatinine clearance is <51 ml/min
Efficacy and tolerability in infants under 3 months not established

Accidental overdose could occur during therapy, treatment should be symptomatic

Other beta-lactam Antibiotics

Intravenous bolus and infusion administration with compatible infusion fluids
