Indications

Pharmacology

Bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis

Dosage

  • 500 mg to 1 gm dose for adults every 8 hours
  • 10 to 40 mg/kg dose for children every 8 hours
  • Intravenous Infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes

Administration

Intravenous Infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes or as intravenous bolus (5 to 20 ml) over approximately 3-5 minutes

Interaction

  • Interaction with Probenecid
  • Reduction of serum valproic acid levels

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to Meropenem

Side Effects

  • Inflammation at the site of injection
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Skin reactions like rash, pruritus, urticaria
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Headache

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B, caution during lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Allergic reaction
  • Use with careful monitoring in patients with hepatic disease

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage adjustments in renal impairment
  • No dosage adjustments in hepatic impairment
  • Hemodialysis for hemodialysis patients
  • Efficacy and tolerability in infants under 3 months not established
