Indications

  • Pneumonia and Nosocomial Pneumonia

  • Pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis

Pharmacology

Exerts bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis and shows potent bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.

Dosage

  • Usual dosage is 500 mg to 1 gm by IV administration every 8 hours for adults
  • Dosing varies for different infections and age groups

Administration

Administered by IV infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes or as IV bolus over approximately 3-5 minutes

Interaction

Competes with probenecid for active tubular secretion and may reduce serum valproic acid levels

Contraindications

Contraindicated in patients with demonstrated hypersensitivity to the product

Precautions & Warnings

  • Discontinue drug if allergic reaction occurs
  • Use in patients with hepatic disease should be carefully monitored

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage should be reduced in renal impairment patients
  • No dosage adjustments necessary in hepatic impairment
  • No dosage adjustments necessary in elderly patients unless creatinine clearance is <51 ml/min
  • Efficacy and tolerability in infants under 3 months not established

Overdose Effects

Accidental overdose could occur, treatment should be symptomatic
