Indications

Pharmacology
Bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis
Dosage
- Adults:
- 500 mg to 1 gm every 8 hours
- Based on infection type and severity
- Children:
- 10 to 40 mg/kg every 8 hours
- Dependent on infection type and severity
Administration
- Intravenous Infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes or Intravenous bolus over approximately 3-5 minutes
Interaction
- Probenecid competition for active tubular secretion
- Potential reduction of serum valproic acid levels
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the product

- Inflammation
- Thrombophlebitis
- Pain at the injection site
- Skin reactions like rash, pruritus, urticaria
- Abdominal pain

Pregnancy Category B, Caution during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Discontinue in case of allergic reaction
- Careful use in patients with hepatic disease
Use in Special Populations
- Dosage reduction in renal impairment
- No adjustment for hepatic impairment
- No dosage adjustment in elderly unless creatinine clearance is <51 ml/min
- Efficacy not established in infants under 3 months

Symptomatic treatment, hemodialysis in cases of renal impairment

Reconstitution
- Intravenous bolus Administration: Reconstitute with sterile water for injection
- Intravenous infusion administration: May be constituted with a compatible infusion fluid and then further diluted
- Compatibility with infusion fluids:
- 0.9% sodium chloride
- 5% or 10% glucose with/without additives
- 5% glucose with 0.15% potassium chloride
- 2.5% and 10% mannitol
- Normosol-M in 5% glucose
- Reconstitution Stability: Up to 3 hours at up to 25°C or 13 hours at up to 5°C
