Description
Neopenem is an antibiotic indicated for the treatment of various infections caused by bacteria sensitive to Neopenem. It exerts its bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis.

- Pneumonia
- Nosocomial Pneumonia
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Intra-abdominal Infections
- Gynaecological Infections
- Skin and Skin Structure Infections
- Meningitis
- Septicaemia
- Pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis
- Empiric treatment for presumed infections in patients with febrile neutropenia
Pharmacology
Meropenem is a carbapenem antibiotic with potent bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Dosage
- Adults:
- 500mg to 1g IV every 8 hours for various infections
- Up to 2g IV every 8 hours for cystic fibrosis
- Children:
- 10 to 40mg/kg IV every 8 hours for different infections
- 25-40mg/kg IV every 8 hours for cystic fibrosis
Administration
- Intravenous infusion over 15-30 minutes
- Intravenous bolus over 3-5 minutes
Interaction
- Competes with Probenecid for active tubular secretion
- May reduce serum valproic acid levels
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Meropenem

Pregnancy lactation
- Pregnancy category: B
- Usage caution: Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Caution in nursing women.
Precautions warnings
- Discontinue if allergic reaction occurs
- Use with careful monitoring in patients with hepatic disease
Special populations
- Renal impairment: Dosage reduction for creatinine clearance <51 ml/min
- Hepatic impairment: No dosage adjustments needed
- Elderly: No dosage adjustments unless creatinine clearance is <51 ml/min
- Use in children: Efficacy and tolerability not established in infants under 3 months
Overdose effects
Symptomatic treatment for accidental overdose, haemodialysis in renal impairment
