Indications

  • Treats pneumonia and nosocomial pneumonia
  • Treats urinary tract infections
  • Treats intra-abdominal infections
  • Treats gynaecological infections
  • Treats skin and skin structure infections
  • Treats meningitis
  • Treats septicaemia
  • Treats pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis
  • Empiric treatment for presumed infections in patients with febrile neutropenia

Pharmacology

  • Exerts bactericidal action
  • Interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis
  • Potent bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria
  • Penetrates bacterial cell walls
  • High stability to all serine beta-lactamases
  • Marked affinity for the Penicillin Binding Proteins (PBPs)

Dosage

  • Dependent on type and severity of infection
  • Varied dosage for different types of infections
  • Recommended daily dosage for adults
  • Recommended daily dosage for children
  • Intravenous administration every 8 hours for adults
  • Intravenous administration every 8 hours for children

Administration

  • Administered by intravenous infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes
  • Administered as intravenous bolus over approximately 3-5 minutes

Interaction

  • Probenecid competes with Merocon for active tubular secretion
  • Inhibits renal excretion of Merocon
  • May reduce serum valproic acid levels

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients with demonstrated hypersensitivity to the product

  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Skin reactions like rash, pruritus, urticaria
  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category B
  • Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman

Precautions & Warnings

  • If allergic reaction occurs, discontinue the drug
  • Careful monitoring of transaminase and bilirubin levels in patients with hepatic disease

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage reduction in patients with renal impairment
  • No dosage adjustments necessary with impairment of liver function
  • Administration after dialysis for hemodialysis patients
  • Efficacy and tolerability in infants under 3 months not established

Overdose Effects

  • Accidental overdose could occur, particularly in patients with renal impairment
  • Symptomatic treatment for overdose
