Indications

Pharmacology
Carbapenem antibiotic for parenteral use, interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis, potent bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria
Dosage
- Dosage and duration depend on type and severity of infection, Recommended daily dosage for adults: 500 mg to 1 gm every 8 hours, for children: 10 to 40 mg/kg intravenously every 8 hours
Administration
Administered by intravenous Infusion over approximately 15-30 minutes or as intravenous bolus over approximately 3-5 minutes
Interaction
Probenecid competes with Merocon for active tubular secretion, Merocon may reduce serum valproic acid levels
Contraindications
Contraindicated in patients with demonstrated hypersensitivity

Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B, Caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman
Precautions & Warnings
- Allergic reaction should prompt discontinuation
- Use with careful monitoring in patients with hepatic disease
Use in Special Populations
- Renal impairment: Dosage should be reduced in patients with creatinine clearance less than 51 ml/min.
- Hepatic impairment: No dosage adjustments are necessary
- Elderly: No dosage adjustments are necessary
- Use in Children: Efficacy and tolerability in infants under 3 months not established
Overdose Effects
Accidental overdose could occur, treatment should be symptomatic, haemodialysis may be necessary in subjects with renal impairment
