Indications

  • Pneumonia and Nosocomial Pneumonia
  • Urinary Tract Infections
  • Intra-abdominal Infections
  • Gynaecological Infections
  • Skin and Skin Structure Infections
  • Meningitis
  • Septicaemia
  • Pulmonary infections in cystic fibrosis
  • Empiric treatment for presumed infections in patients with febrile neutropenia

Pharmacology

Exerts bactericidal action by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis; Potent activity against a broad spectrum of bacteria

Dosage

  • Adults:
    • Recommended daily dosage of 500 mg to 1 gm by intravenous administration every 8 hours
  • Children:
    • Dosage tailored based on age and severity of infection
    • No experience in children with hepatic or renal impairment

Administration

Administered by intravenous infusion over 15-30 minutes or as intravenous bolus over 3-5 minutes

Interaction

  • Competes with probenecid for active tubular secretion
  • May reduce serum valproic acid levels

Hypersensitivity to the product

Side Effects

  • Inflammation and thrombophlebitis at the injection site
  • Skin reactions like rash, pruritus, urticaria
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache

Pregnancy & Lactation

Pregnancy Category B; Caution during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

  • Discontinue if allergic reaction occurs
  • Careful monitoring in patients with hepatic disease

Use in Special Populations

  • Dosage reduction in renal impairment
  • No adjustment needed in hepatic impairment
  • Caution in infants under 3 months

Overdose Effects

Accidental overdose possible, treatment should be symptomatic
