Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action on protein synthesis

Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult oral dosage of 1-2 g daily
- Usual oral dosage for children older than 8 years
- Preferable intake timing in relation to meals
- Specific dosage for Acne vulgaris, staphylococcal infections, streptococcal infections, amoebiasis, brucellosis, subacute bacterial endocarditis, syphilis
Interaction
- Impaired absorption with antacids and certain preparations
- Interference with bactericidal action of penicillin
- Potentiation of anticoagulants effect
- Decrease in efficacy of oral contraceptives
- Exacerbation of nephrotoxic effects by diuretics
- Increase in hypoglycemic effect of insulin
- Increase in toxic effects of ergot alkaloids and methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracycline groups
- Cross-sensitivity in tetracycline groups
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Renal impairment

- Depression of bone growth
- Gray-brown discoloration of teeth
- Enamel hypoplasia
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Photosensitivity reactions
- Gastrointestinal effects
- Epigastric distress and nausea
- Vomiting
- Accentuated prerenal azotemia
- Superinfections with oral and anogenital candidiasis
- Esophageal ulcerations
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoidance during pregnancy
- Risk of hypertoxicity in the mother
- Risk of impaired bone growth and permanent discoloration in child's teeth during breastfeeding or in children up to the age of 8-12 years
Precautions & Warnings
- Care with impaired liver function
- Avoidance of high doses in impaired liver function
- Avoidance of concomitant administration with potentially hepatotoxic drugs
