Description
- Tetracycline drug of choice in infections like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, pneumonia, chlamydial infections, urethritis, Lyme disease, brucellosis.
- Effective on Gram positive aerobic Cocci but many strains of staphylococci, streptococci and some pneumococci are resistant.
- Not the drug of choice for gram positive aerobes, pseudomonas, and many Enterobacteriaceae.
- Useful against anaerobic bacteria, Brucella species, Calymmatobacterium granulomatis, Vibrio cholerae, V. vulnificus.

Technical Specifications

Mode of Action
- Main mechanism on protein synthesis
- Active transport system pumps the drug through the inner cytoplasmic membrane of bacteria
- Binds specifically to the 30s ribosomes and inhibits bacterial protein synthesis
Interaction
- Impaired absorption with antacids, Fe, Zn, and Na bicarbonate preparations, kaolin-pectin, bismuth subsalicylate, sucralfate, strontium ranelate, colestipol, colestyramine
- May interfere with penicillin's action
- May potentiate anticoagulants
- May decrease efficacy of oral contraceptives
- May increase the hypoglycemic effect of insulin and sulfonylureas
- May increase toxic effects of ergot alkaloids and methotrexate

- Hypersensitivity to tetracycline groups
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Renal impairment

- Superinfections with oral and anogenital candidiasis

Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoid in pregnancy and during breastfeeding, may result in impaired bone growth and permanent teeth discoloration in children
