Description

Tetracycline drug of choice in infections like Rocky Mountain spotted fever, pneumonia, chlamydial infections, urethritis, Lyme disease, brucellosis.
Effective on Gram positive aerobic Cocci but many strains of staphylococci, streptococci and some pneumococci are resistant.
Not the drug of choice for gram positive aerobes, pseudomonas, and many Enterobacteriaceae.
Useful against anaerobic bacteria, Brucella species, Calymmatobacterium granulomatis, Vibrio cholerae, V. vulnificus.

Mode of Action

Main mechanism on protein synthesis

Interaction

Impaired absorption with antacids, Fe, Zn, and Na bicarbonate preparations, kaolin-pectin, bismuth subsalicylate, sucralfate, strontium ranelate, colestipol, colestyramine
May interfere with penicillin's action
May potentiate anticoagulants
May decrease efficacy of oral contraceptives
May increase the hypoglycemic effect of insulin and sulfonylureas
May increase toxic effects of ergot alkaloids and methotrexate
