Pharmacology
- Mechanism of action on protein synthesis
- Energy-dependent active transport system
- Binds to the 30s ribosomes
- Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis
- Susceptible to Gram positive aerobic Cocci
- Resistant to certain staphylococci and streptococci
- Active against anaerobic species of bacteria
- Half-life of about 12 hours
- Excretion in urine and feces
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult oral dosage of 1-2 g daily
- Usual oral dosage for children older than 8 years
- Administration preferably before or after meals
- Specific dosage for Acne vulgaris, staphylococcal infections, streptococcal infections, Amoebiasis, Brucellosis, Bacterial endocarditis, Syphilis
Interaction
- Impaired absorption with antacids and certain preparations
- Interference with bactericidal action of penicillin
- Potentiation of anticoagulants
- Decrease in efficacy of oral contraceptives
- Potential increase in hypoglycemic effect of insulin and sulfonylureas
- Potential increase in toxic effects of certain drugs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracycline groups
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Renal impairment

- Superinfections with oral and anogenital candidiasis
