Pharmacology
- Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
- Susceptibility to Gram positive aerobic Cocci
- Resistance in staphylococci, streptococci, and some pneumococci
- Resistance in Pseudomonas and many Enterobacteriaceae
- Activity against Brucella species
- Activity against Vibrio cholerae and V. vulnificus
- Activity against anaerobic species of bacteria
- Absorption from the gastrointestinal tract
- Distribution in body tissues and fluids
- Half-life of approximately 12 hours
- Excretion in urine and feces
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult oral dosage of 1-2g daily
- Usual oral dosage for children older than 8 years in 25-50mg/kg daily
- Preferable intake one hour before or 2 hours after meals
- Specific dosage for Acne vulgaris, staphylococcal infections, streptococcal infections, amoebiasis, brucellosis, subacute bacterial endocarditis, syphilis
Interactions
- Impaired absorption with antacids containing divalent and trivalent cations
- Interference with bactericidal action of penicillin
- Potentiation of anticoagulant effects
- Decreased efficacy of oral contraceptives
- Potential exacerbation of nephrotoxic effects by diuretics or other nephrotoxic drugs
- Potential increase in hypoglycemic effect of insulin and sulfonylureas in patients with DM
- Increased toxic effects of ergot alkaloids and methotrexate
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracycline
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Renal impairment

- Photosensitivity reactions
- Gastrointestinal effects
- Accentuated prerenal azotemia
- Superinfections with oral and anogenital candidiasis

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoidance during pregnancy and lactation
- Risk of hypertoxicity in the mother and effects on the developing fetus
- Potential impairments in bone growth and discoloration of child's teeth
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with impaired liver function
- Avoidance of high doses
- Avoidance of concomitant administration with potentially hepatotoxic drugs
