- Mode of Action: Inhibition of bacterial protein synthesis
- Pharmacokinetics:
- Not the drug of choice for gram-positive aerobes
- Resistant to Pseudomonas and many Enterobacteriaceae
- Incompletely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract
- Half-life of about 12 hours
- Excreted in urine and feces
- Recommended Adult Dosage: 1-2g daily in 2-4 divided doses
- Recommended Pediatric Dosage: 25-50mg/kg daily in 2-4 divided doses
- Dosage Administration: Preferably one hour before or 2 hours after meals
- Interactions:
- Impaired absorption with antacids
- May interfere with bactericidal action of penicillin
- May decrease efficacy of oral contraceptives
- May increase hypoglycaemic effect of insulin
- Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to tetracycline groups
- Systemic lupus erythematosus
- Severe renal impairment
- Side Effects:
- Depression of bone growth
- Permanent discoloration of teeth
- Enamel hypoplasia
- Hypersensitivity reactions
- Photosensitivity reactions
- Gastrointestinal effects
- Superinfections with candidiasis
- Esophageal ulcerations
- Pregnancy & Lactation: Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, may impair bone growth and discolor teeth

- Caution in patients with impaired liver function
- Avoid concomitant use with potentially hepatotoxic drugs
