Description
- Oxecylin is primarily a bacteriostatic broad-spectrum antibiotic
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms
- Inhibits protein synthesis of bacteria
- Effective against parasites such as rickettsia, mycoplasma, chlamydia, and amoeba
Indications
- Respiratory tract infections
- Mycoplasma pneumonia
- Urinary tract infections
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Skin infections
- Ophthalmic infections
- Rickettsial infections
- Other infections
Pharmacology
- Inhibits cell growth by inhibiting translation
- Binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit
- Prevents the amino-acyl tRNA from binding to the A site of the ribosome
- Lipophilic and can easily pass through the cell membrane
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 250-500 mg every 6 hours
- Tetracyclines absorption is interfered by food, milk, and some dairy products
Interactions
- Antacids containing Aluminium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc or Iron salts may impair the absorption of Oxecylin
- Tetracyclines depress plasma prothrombin activity in long term therapy
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Tetracyclines
- Children under 12 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Possible tooth staining in the fetus
- Possible growth retardation effects in the fetus

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Tetracyclines cross the placenta
- Found in fetal tissues
- Can have toxic effects on the developing fetus
- Embryotoxicity noted in animals treated early in pregnancy
- Present in the milk of lactating women
