Description
Bacteriostatic broad-spectrum antibiotic, wide spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms, inhibits protein synthesis of bacteria, effective against parasites
Pharmacology
Inhibits cell growth by inhibiting translation, binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, prevents the amino-acyl tRNA from binding to the A site of the ribosome, lipophilic, easily passes through the cell membrane or diffuses through porin channels
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 250-500 mg every 6 hours, should be given one hour before or two hours after meals
Interaction
Antacids containing Aluminium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc or Iron salts may impair absorption, depresses plasma prothrombin activity in long term therapy, may require reduced doses of concomitant anticoagulants, potential interaction with oral contraceptives
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Tetracyclines, children under 12 years of age, pregnant women

Pregnancy & Lactation
Crosses the placenta, found in fetal tissues, toxic effects on the developing fetus, embryotoxicity, present in the milk of lactating women
