Description
Bacteriostatic broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms, parasites such as rickettsia, mycoplasma, chlamydia and amoeba.
Pharmacology
Inhibits cell growth by inhibiting translation, binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, and prevents the amino-acyl tRNA from binding to the A site of the ribosome, lipophilic, and passes through the cell membrane or diffuses through porin channels in the bacterial membrane.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 250-500 mg every 6 hours, should be taken one hour before or two hours after meals to avoid interference with food, milk, and dairy products.
Interaction
Antacids containing Aluminium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc or Iron salts may impair absorption, depression of plasma prothrombin activity in long-term therapy, possible need for reduced doses of concomitant anticoagulants, potential interaction with oral contraceptives.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Tetracyclines, contraindicated in children under 12 years of age, contraindicated in pregnant women due to tooth staining in the fetus and possible growth retardation effects.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Crosses the placenta, found in fetal tissues, may have toxic effects on the developing fetus, evidence of embryotoxicity, present in the milk of lactating women.
Precautions & Warnings
Use with caution in renal impairment.
