Description
Chemomycine is a bacteriostatic broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative microorganisms, rickettsia, mycoplasma, chlamydia, and amoeba.
Pharmacology
Oxytetracycline inhibits cell growth by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, preventing amino-acyl tRNA from binding to the A site of the ribosome.
Dosage & Administration
Adults: 250-500 mg every 6 hours. Tetracyclines should be given one hour before or two hours after meals to avoid interference with food, milk, and dairy products.
Interaction
Antacids containing Aluminium, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, or Iron salts may impair the absorption of Chemomycine. Reduced doses of concomitant anticoagulants may be necessary in long-term therapy.
Contraindications
Oxytetracycline should not be used in patients hypersensitive to Tetracyclines or in children under 12 years of age. It is also contraindicated in pregnant women due to potential tooth staining and growth retardation effects in the fetus.

Pregnancy & Lactation
Tetracyclines cross the placenta and can have toxic effects on the developing fetus. They are also present in the milk of lactating women who are taking this drug.
Precautions & Warnings
Chemomycine should be used with caution in renal impairment.
