Description
A highly active broad-spectrum antibiotic of the tetracycline group used to treat various infections caused by susceptible microorganisms.
Indications
- Respiratory tract infections
- Gastrointestinal tract infections
- Chlamydial infections
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Other infections
Dosage
- Usual Dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe Infections Dose: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne Dose: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated Genital Chlamydia Dose: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing.
Mode of Action
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Inhibits protein synthesis
- Active against various bacteria and strains
Interaction
- Impaired absorption by antacids containing aluminum, calcium, or magnesium
- Impaired absorption by iron-containing preparations
- Impaired absorption by bismuth salicylate
- Decreased half-life with barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
- Render oral contraceptives less effective
- Downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages may be required
- Avoid giving in conjunction with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers
