Description
- Highly active broad-spectrum antibiotic

Indications
- Respiratory tract infections
- Gastrointestinal tract infections
- Chlamydial infections
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- Other infections
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Mode of Action
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Active against Staphylococcus aureus and Nocardia
- Active against penicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus
- Active against certain Gram-negative strains
Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic tetracycline antibiotic
- Broad spectrum activity
- Active against various bacteria, spirochetes, mycoplasma, rickettsia, mycobacteria
- Particularly useful for infections with H. ducreyi, Actinomyces, Brucella and Vibrio cholerae
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Absorption impaired by antacids containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium
- Absorption impaired by iron-containing preparations
- Concurrent use may render oral contraceptives less effective
- Anticoagulant therapy may require downward adjustment of dosages
- Avoid giving in conjunction with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoided in pregnant women due to risk of staining and effect on bone growth in the fetus
- Enters breast milk, mothers should not breastfeed

- Avoid use during tooth development in children under 8 years
- May cause permanent discoloration of teeth
