Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Active against Staphylococcus aureus and Nocardia
- Effective against penicillin-resistant strains
- Active against E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and Klebsiella
- Active against Haemophilus influenzae and Vibrio cholerae
- Active against Nocardia, Chlamydia, and Mycoplasma
- Active against Rickettsiae and spirochetes
- Active against Plasmodium falciparum
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Impaired by antacids and iron-containing preparations
- Impaired by bismuth salicylate
- Decreased half-life by barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
- Render oral contraceptives less effective
- May require downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
- Avoid giving in conjunction with penicillin

- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy and lactation
- Avoided in pregnant women
