Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Gram-negative strains sensitivity
- Anaerobes sensitivity
- Activity against Haemophilus influenzae

- Active against Plasmodium falciparum
Dosage
- 200mg on first day followed by 100mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia: 100mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing.
Interaction
- Impaired by antacids
- Impaired by iron-containing preparations
- Decreased half-life with barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin
- Render oral contraceptives less effective
- May require downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
- Avoid giving in conjunction with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoid in pregnant women and lactating mothers due to risk of staining and effect on bone growth in the foetus
Precautions & Warnings
Avoid use during tooth development in children to prevent permanent discoloration of teeth
