Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Active against Staphylococcus aureus and Nocardia
- Active against penicillin-resistant strains
- Sensitive to various anaerobes
- Active against Haemophilus influenzae
- Active against Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and Rickettsiae
- Active against spirochetes and Plasmodium falciparum
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Impaired absorption by antacids, iron-containing preparations, and bismuth salicylate
- Barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin decrease half-life
- Concurrent use may render oral contraceptives less effective
- May require downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
- Avoid giving in conjunction with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women and lactating mothers

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid in pregnant women due to risk of staining and effect on bone growth in fetus
- Enter breast milk, mothers should not breastfeed
