Description
- Broad-spectrum antibiotic
- Tetracycline group
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Protein synthesis inhibition
Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Broad spectrum activity
- Active against Staphylococcus aureus
- Activity against penicillin-resistant strains
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day
- 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Absorption impaired by antacids and iron-containing preparations
- Impaired by bismuth salicylate
- Decreased half-life with barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
- May render oral contraceptives less effective
- May require anticoagulant dosage adjustment
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers
