- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Broad spectrum activity
- Active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibits protein synthesis
Mode of Action
- Inhibition of protein synthesis
- Activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Nocardia
- Resistance against penicillin-resistant strains
- Sensitivity to various anaerobes
- Activity against Haemophilus influenzae and Nocardia
- Activity against Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and Rickettsiae
- Activity against spirochetes and Plasmodium falciparum
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Impaired absorption by antacids and iron-containing preparations
- Decreased half-life by barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
- Rendering oral contraceptives less effective
- Requirement of downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
- Avoidance in conjunction with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers
