Description
Highly active broad-spectrum antibiotic of tetracycline group
Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Active against penicillin-resistant strains
- Active against various anaerobes
- Active against spirochetes
Dosage
- Usual dose of 200mg on first day, then 100mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200mg daily for 10 days
- Acne treatment: 100mg daily
- Treatment for genital chlamydia: 100mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
Impaired absorption with antacids and iron-containing preparations, decreased half-life with barbiturates, carbamazepine and phenytoin, reduced effectiveness with concurrent use of oral contraceptives
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines, children under 8 years of age, pregnant women, lactating mothers
