Indications

Pharmacology
- Semisynthetic tetracycline antibiotic with broad spectrum activity
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Inhibits protein synthesis
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
- Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Absorption impaired by antacids, iron-containing preparations, and bismuth salicylate
- Barbiturates, carbamazepine, phenytoin decrease half-life
- Concurrent use may render oral contraceptive less effective
- May require downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
- Avoid giving in conjunction with penicillin

- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy lactation
- Avoid in pregnant women due to risk of staining and effect on bone growth
