Description
Highly active broad-spectrum antibiotic of tetracycline group
Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Effective against penicillin-resistant strains
- Active against various anaerobes
- Active against Haemophilus influenzae and Nocardia
- Active against Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, and Rickettsiae
- Active against spirochetes
- Active against Plasmodium falciparum
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Impaired absorption by antacids and iron-containing preparations
- Decrease in half-life with barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
- Reduced effectiveness of oral contraceptives with concurrent use
- Possible need for downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
- Advisable to avoid concurrent use with penicillin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoided in pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers due to risk of staining and effect on bone growth in the foetus
Precautions & Warnings
Should not be used in children under 8 years to prevent permanent discoloration of teeth
