Description
Highly active broad-spectrum antibiotic of tetracycline group
Pharmacology
- Bacteriostatic antibiotic
- Activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria
- Mechanism of action on protein synthesis
Dosage
- Usual dose: 200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
- Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
- Acne: 100 mg daily
- Uncomplicated genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days
Administration
Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing
Interaction
- Impaired absorption by antacid containing aluminium, calcium or magnesium
- Decreased half-life by barbiturates, carbamazepine and phenytoin
- Render oral contraceptive less effective
- Require downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
- Children under 8 years of age
- Pregnant women
- Lactating mothers

Pregnancy & Lactation
Avoided in pregnant women, risk of staining and effect on bone growth in the fetus, enters breast milk

Avoid use during tooth development in children, may cause permanent discoloration of teeth
