Indications
- Essential hypertension

Pharmacology
- Calcium antagonist
- Vasodilator
- Reduces peripheral vascular resistance
- Reduces blood pressure
- Reduces cardiac demand
- Beta-blocker
- Lowers cardiac output
- Decreases plasma renin activity
- Reduces sympathetic outflow from CNS
- Reduces myocardial oxygen demand
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage: 5/25 mg once daily
- Can be increased to 5/25 mg twice daily
- Individualized dosage
Interactions
- Disopyramide: reduces clearance, negative inotropic effects
- Ampicillin: may reduce Atenolol levels
- Oral antidiabetics and insulin: may decrease tissue sensitivity to insulin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to components
- Sinus bradycardia
- Second and higher degrees of heart block
- Cardiogenic shock
- Hypotension
- Congestive heart failure
- Poor left ventricular function

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use during pregnancy if benefit outweighs fetal risk
