Description

Highly active broad-spectrum antibiotic of tetracycline group effective against a wide range of bacteria, spirochete, mycoplasma, and mycobacteria.

Sexually transmitted diseases
Other infections

Pharmacology

Semisynthetic tetracycline antibiotic with broad-spectrum activity primarily bacteriostatic and effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Nocardia, E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, Klebsiella, Haemophilus influenzae, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Rickettsiae, spirochetes, and Plasmodium falciparum.

Dosage

200 mg on first day, then 100 mg daily for 7-10 days
Severe infections: 200 mg daily for 10 days
Acne: 100 mg daily
Uncomplicated genital chlamydia: 100 mg twice daily for 7-21 days

Administration

Capsules should be swallowed whole with plenty of fluid during meals while sitting or standing.

Interaction

Impaired absorption by antacids, iron preparations, and bismuth salicylate
Decreased half-life with barbiturates, carbamazepine, and phenytoin
Rendering oral contraceptives less effective
Downward adjustment of anticoagulant dosages
Avoid concurrent use with penicillin

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines
Children under 8 years of age
Pregnant women
Lactating mothers

Pregnancy & Lactation

Avoided in pregnant women and nursing mothers due to staining and effects on bone growth in the fetus and entry into breast milk

Avoid use during tooth development in children under 8 years to prevent permanent tooth discoloration
