G-Gentamicin 40 mg/2 ml (IM/IV Injection)

Indications

• Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
• Treatment of conditions such as septicaemia, meningitis, respiratory tract infections, infected wounds, skin and soft tissue infections

Pharmacology

• Proven bactericidal antibiotic
• Active against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative pathogens
• Interferes with bacterial protein synthesis
• Binds to the 30S sub-units of bacterial ribosomes
• Active against some Gram-positive organisms
• Active against Salmonella and Shigella bacteria

Dosage & Administration

• Given by intramuscular route
• Usual adult dosage of 3-5 mg/kg/day in three divided doses
• Usual pediatric dosage up to 2 weeks: 3 mg/kg/every 12 hours
• Dosage for pediatric patients aged 2 weeks to 12 years: 2 mg/kg/every 8 hours
• Instructions for intravenous administration and dilution
• Guidelines for infusion periods and disposal

Interaction

• Avoid concurrent use with potentially nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs
• Potential interaction with potent diuretics
• Inactivation by solutions containing beta-lactam antibiotics

Side Effects

• Vestibular damage
• Reversible nephrotoxicity
• Auditory ototoxicity leading to symptoms like dizziness, vertigo, and hearing loss
• Adverse renal effects in patients with renal impairment

• Safety not established
• Risk of ototoxicity in fetus
• Recommendations for use in pregnant and breastfeeding women
