Indications

Pharmacology
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against Gram-negative pathogens
- Active against some Gram-positive organisms
- Interferes with bacterial protein synthesis
- Binds to 30S sub-units of bacterial ribosomes
Dosage & Administration
- Intramuscular administration
- Intravenous administration
- Usual adult dose: 3-5 mg/kg/day
- Usual pediatric dose: 2 mg/kg/every 8 hours
- Dosage adjustment for impaired renal function
- Intravenous administration dilution with saline or glucose
Interaction
- Avoid concurrent use with nephrotoxic drugs
- Avoid concurrent use with ototoxic drugs
- Potent diuretics may potentiate ototoxic effects
- Inactivation by beta-lactam antibiotics
Side Effects
- Vestibular damage
- Reversible nephrotoxicity
- Auditory ototoxicity
- Symptoms: dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss
- Adverse renal effects
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use not established in pregnancy
- Crosses placenta
- Risk of ototoxicity in fetus
- Use justified if seriousness of mother's condition
- Breastfeeding discontinuation recommended during therapy
