Indications
- Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible microorganisms
- Septicaemia
- Meningitis
- Respiratory tract infections
- Infected wounds
- Skin and skin structure infection
- Bone and soft tissue infections
- Urinary tract infections
Pharmacology
- Bactericidal antibiotic
- Active against Gram-negative pathogens
- Active against some Gram-positive organisms
- Interferes with bacterial protein synthesis
- In vitro activity against Salmonella and Shigella
Dosage & Administration
- Intramuscular administration
- Intravenous administration
- Usual adult dose of 3-5 mg/kg/day
- Pediatric dosage based on age and weight

Interaction
- Avoid concurrent use with potentially nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs
- Potent diuretics may potentiate ototoxic effects
- Inactivated by solutions containing beta-lactam antibiotics
Side Effects
- Vestibular damage
- Reversible nephrotoxicity
- Auditory ototoxicity
- Symptoms include dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss
- Adverse renal effects in patients with history of renal impairment
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established for pregnancy and lactation
- Crosses the placenta with risk of ototoxicity in fetus
- Usage only if mother's condition justifies risk
- Small amounts detected in breast milk
- Breastfeeding discontinuation recommended during therapy
