Indications

Blepharitis

Pharmacology

Actively transported across bacterial cell membrane
Binds to specific receptor protein on the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes
Interferes with initiation complex between mRNA and the 30S subunit
Inhibits protein synthesis
May be absorbed following topical application to the eye
Active against various microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Dosage & Administration

1-2 drops instilled in affected eye up to 6 times a day
Severe infections may require 1-2 drops every 15-20 minutes initially
2-3 drops should be instilled in the ear every 3-4 times a day and at night

None reported with topical and Eye/Ear drops

Contraindications

Contraindicated in individuals with history of sensitivity reaction to any of its components
May allow overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms including fungi

Side Effects

Irritation (erythema and pruritus)
Itching, redness, swelling or other signs of irritation
Ocular burning and irritation upon drug instillation
Non-specific conjunctivitis
Conjunctival epithelial defects
Conjunctival hyperemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

Possibility of fetal ototoxicity when applied topically to large denuded areas of skin
Safety profile in pregnancy not yet established

Precautions & Warnings

Discontinue if irritation or sensitization develops
Not for injection, not for subconjunctival or direct introduction into the anterior chamber of the eye
