Pharmacology

Actively transported across bacterial cell membrane
Binds to specific receptor protein on 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes
Interferes with initiation complex between mRNA and 30S subunit
Inhibits protein synthesis
May be absorbed following topical application to the eye or ear
Active against various microorganisms

Dosage & Administration

1-2 drops instilled in affected eye up to 6 times a day
Severe infections may require more frequent instillation initially

Interaction

No reported interactions with topical and Eye/Ear drops

Contraindications

Contraindicated in individuals with history of sensitivity reaction to any of its components
May allow overgrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, including fungi

Side Effects

Irritation (erythema and pruritus)
Itching, redness, swelling or other signs of irritation
Bacterial and corneal ulcers
Ocular burning and irritation upon drug instillation
Non-specific conjunctivitis
Conjunctival epithelial defects
Conjunctival hyperemia

Pregnancy & Lactation

Possibility of foetal ototoxicity when applied topically to large denuded areas of skin
Safety profile in pregnancy not yet established

Precautions & Warnings

If irritation or sensitization develops, treatment should be discontinued
Not for injection
Should never be injected subconjunctivally or directly into the anterior chamber of the eye
