  • Blepharitis

Pharmacology

  • Actively transported across bacterial cell membrane
  • Binds to a specific receptor protein on the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes
  • Interferes with initiation complex between mRNA and the 30S subunit
  • Inhibits protein synthesis
  • Active against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Niesseria gonorrhoea, Pseudomonus aeruginosa, and Serratia marcescens

Dosage & Administration

  • 1-2 drops instilled in affected eye up to 6 times a day for eye
  • 2-3 drops instilled every 3-4 times a day for ear

Interaction

  • None reported with topical and Eye/Ear drops

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in individuals with a history of sensitivity reaction to any of its components

Side Effects

  • Irritation (erythema and pruritus) in dermatoses patients
  • Ocular burning and irritation upon drug instillation
  • Non-specific conjunctivitis
  • Conjunctival epithelial defects
  • Conjunctival hyperemia
  • Bacterial and corneal ulcer with eye/ear drops

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Possibility of foetal ototoxicity when applied to large denuded areas of skin
  • Safety profile not yet established during pregnancy

Precautions & Warnings

  • Discontinue if irritation or sensitization develops
  • Not for injection
  • Should not be injected subconjunctivally or directly into the anterior chamber of the eye
