Description

  • Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
  • Exerts bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
  • Effective against penicillinase producing staphylococci
  • Susceptible to various micro-organisms
  • Interferes with ribosomal protein synthesis within bacterial cell

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
  • Specific binding to 50S subunit or 70S ribosome
  • Active against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria
  • Active against mycoplasmas and chlamydia
  • Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids
  • Enters cerebrospinal fluid and crosses the placenta
  • Excreted in the milk and urine

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections
  • Elderly dosage
  • Children dosage for different age groups

Interaction

  • Potential interaction with theophylline leading to increased serum levels and toxicity

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin

  • Abdominal discomfort after oral administration

  • Mild and occasional anaphylaxis
  • Temporary discomfort that subsides after a few days

Pregnancy & Lactation
