Description
- Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
- Exerts a bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
- Interference with ribosomal protein synthesis
- Used for the treatment of infections caused by penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Particularly susceptible to Gram (+)ve and Gram (-)ve micro-organisms
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Specific binding to the 50S subunit or 70S ribosome
- Active against Gram-positive bacteria, some Gram-negative bacteria, mycoplasmas, and chlamydia
- Destroyed by acid and administered in the form of stable ester
- Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids
- Enters the cerebrospinal fluid when meninges are inflamed
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for adults and children over 8 years
- Dosage for elderly
- Dosage for children aged 2 to 8 years
- Dosage for infants and children up to 2 years
Interaction
- Potential increase of serum theophylline levels
- Caution in patients receiving high dosage of theophylline
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin

- Abdominal discomfort after oral administration
- Nausea and vomiting after oral administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence in humans of teratogenicity or toxicity

Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care in patients with impaired hepatic function
- Excreted principally in the bile
Overdose Effects
- Discontinue use in case of overdosage
- Prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug
Reconstitution
- Direction for reconstitution of suspension
- Shake the bottle to loosen powder
- Add specific volume of boiled and cooled water to the dry powder of the bottle
- Shake well after each addition until all the powder is in suspension
- Keep the reconstituted suspension in a cool and dry place
- Unused portion should be discarded after specific days
