Mode of Action
ERO, belonging to the macrolides group of antibiotics, exerts bacteriostatic or bactericidal action by interfering with ribosomal protein synthesis within the bacterial cell.
Pharmacology
- Inhibition: Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms by inhibiting the translocation process
- Binding: Specific binding to the 50S subunit or 70S ribosome in organisms
- Activity: Active against many Gram-positive bacteria, some Gram-negative bacteria, mycoplasmas, and chlamydia
Dosage & Administration
- Adult and Children over 8 years:
- 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections
- Up to 4 gm daily in severe cases
- Elderly: No special dosage recommendation
- Children aged 2 to 8 years: 250 mg every six hours or 30-50 mg/kg body weight per day divided into four equal dosages
- Infants and Children up to 2 years: 500 mg in divided doses or 30-50 mg/kg body weight in divided doses
Interaction
High dosage use with theophylline may increase serum theophylline levels and potential theophylline toxicity
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin

- Occasional abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
No evidence of human teratogenicity or toxicity in clinical and laboratory studies, caution should be exercised when prescribing to pregnant patients and lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
Should be given with care in patients with impaired hepatic function
Overdose Effects
If overdosed, ERO should be discontinued and unabsorbed drug should be promptly eliminated with appropriate measures; not removed by peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis

Reconstitution
Instructions for reconstitution of suspension; reconstituted suspension should be stored in a cool and dry place, preferably in the refrigerator and unused portion should be discarded after 7 days
