Description
- Belongs to macrolides group of antibiotics
- Exerts bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
- Effective against penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Susceptible to various micro-organisms
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis
- Active against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Specific binding to 50S subunit or 70S ribosome
- Active against Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative bacteria
- Rate of absorption diminished by presence of food
- Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids
- Enters cerebrospinal fluid and crosses placenta
- Excreted in urine and bile
Dosage & Administration
- Dosage for adults and children over 8 years
- No special dosage recommendation for elderly
- Dosage for children aged 2 to 8 years
- Dosage for infants and children up to 2 years
Interaction
- May increase serum theophylline levels
- Potential theophylline toxicity
- Requires reduction in theophylline dose
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin
Side Effects
- Rare allergic reactions
- Mild anaphylaxis may occur
- Occasional abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity or toxicity in humans
- Caution advised for pregnant patients
- Erythromycin crosses placental barrier and is excreted in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Careful use in patients with impaired hepatic function
Overdose Effects
- Discontinue Erocin in case of overdosage
- Prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug
- Not removed by peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis

Reconstitution
- Direction for reconstitution of suspension
- Shake bottle to loosen powder
- Add boiled and cooled water to the dry powder
- Shake well after each addition
- Keep reconstituted suspension in cool and dry place
- Discard unused portion after 7 days

- Away from light and moisture
