Indications

  • Treatment of upper respiratory tract infections

Description

  • Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
  • Exerts a bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
  • Effective against penicillinase producing staphylococci
  • Susceptible to Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis
  • Specific binding to the 50S subunit or 70S ribosome
  • Active against many Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative bacteria
  • Absorbed in the form of stable ester
  • Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended dosage for adults and children over 8 years

Interaction

  • Potential interaction with theophylline leading to increased serum levels
