Description

  • Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
  • Exerts a bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
  • Effective against penicillinase producing staphylococci

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
  • Binds to the 50S subunit or 70S ribosome
  • Active against many Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria
  • Distributed widely throughout body tissue and fluids
  • Enters cerebrospinal fluid when meninges are inflamed
  • Excreted in the urine and bile

Dosage & Administration

  • 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections
  • May be increased up to 4 gm daily in severe cases
  • Special dosage recommendations for different age groups

Interaction

  • May increase serum theophylline levels and potential theophylline toxicity

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin
