Description
- Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
- Exerts a bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
- Used for the treatment of infections caused by penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Particularly susceptible to Gram (+)ve and Gram (-)ve micro-organisms
- Active against Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Legionella pneumophila, Bacteroides fragilis
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Absorption rate impacted by the presence of food
- Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids
- Enters the cerebrospinal fluid when the meninges are inflamed
- Excreted in the urine and bile
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections
- Elderly dosage: No special recommendation
- Children aged 2 to 8 years: 250 mg every six hours or 30-50 mg/kg body weight per day
- Infants and Children upto 2 years: 500 mg in divided doses or 30-50 mg/kg body weight in divided doses
Interaction
- Use may increase serum theophylline levels and potential theophylline toxicity
- Requires reduced theophylline dosage in such cases
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin
Side Effects
- Rare and mild allergic reactions
- Occasional abdominal discomfort after oral administration
- May cause nausea and vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of human teratogenicity or toxicity in clinical and laboratory studies
- Caution advised for pregnant patients and lactating mothers due to crossing the placental barrier and excretion in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Administer with care in patients with impaired hepatic function
Overdose Effects
- Prompt discontinuation of E-Rox in case of overdosage
- Handling with the prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug
- Not removed by peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis

Reconstitution
- Shake the bottle to loosen powder
- Add boiled and cooled water to the dry powder
- Shake well after each addition until all the powder is in suspension
- Shake the suspension well before each use
- Store reconstituted suspension in a cool and dry place
- Unused portion should be discarded after 7 days
