Description
- Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
- Exerts a bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
- Effective against penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Susceptible to Gram-positive bacteria
- Active against some Gram-negative bacteria
- Active against mycoplasmas and chlamydia
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Specific binding to the 50S subunit or 70S ribosome
- No binding to the stable 80S mammalian ribosome
- Active against many Gram-positive bacteria
- Enters cerebrospinal fluid when meninges are inflamed
- Crosses the placenta and is excreted in the milk
Dosage & Administration
- 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections in adults and children over 8 years
- May be increased up to 4 gm daily in severe cases
- No special dosage recommendation for elderly
- 250 mg every six hours or 30-50 mg/kg body weight per day for children aged 2 to 8 years
- 500 mg in divided doses or 30-50 mg/kg body weight in divided doses for infants and children up to 2 years
Interaction
- Use may increase serum theophylline levels
- May lead to potential theophylline toxicity
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin
Side Effects
- Rare allergic reactions

- Occasional abdominal discomfort after oral administration
- Nausea and vomiting
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity or toxicity in human studies
- Caution should be exercised when prescribing to pregnant patients and lactating mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care in patients with impaired hepatic function
- Excreted principally in the bile
Overdose Effects
- Discontinuation of Etrocin in case of overdosage
- Prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug
- Appropriate measures should be instituted
- Not removed by peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis

Reconstitution
- Direction for reconstitution of suspension
- Shake the bottle to loosen powder
- Add boiled and cooled water to the dry powder of the bottle
- Shake well after each addition until all the powder is in suspension
- Shake the suspension well before each use
- Store in a cool and dry place
- Unused portion should be discarded after 7 days
