Description
- Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
- Exerts bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
- Effective against penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Susceptible to gram-positive and gram-negative micro-organisms
- Effective against mycoplasmas and chlamydia
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Binds to 50S subunit or 70S ribosome in susceptible organisms
- Active against Gram-positive bacteria and some Gram-negative bacteria
- Enters cerebrospinal fluid when meninges are inflamed
- Crosses placenta and is excreted in milk
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections
- Elderly dosage: no special recommendation, may be administered three times daily or twice daily
- Children aged 2 to 8 years: 250 mg every six hours or 30-50 mg/kg body weight per day
- Infants and children upto 2 years: 500 mg in divided doses or 30-50 mg/kg body weight in divided doses
Interaction
- May increase serum theophylline levels and potential theophylline toxicity
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin
Side Effects
- Rare and mild allergic reactions
- Occasional abdominal discomfort, nausea, and vomiting after oral administration
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity or toxicity in humans
- Caution required for pregnant patients and lactating mothers due to crossing of placental barrier and excretion in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Given with care in patients with impaired hepatic function
- Excreted principally in the bile
Overdose Effects
- Discontinue in case of overdosage
- Prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug and appropriate measures should be instituted

Reconstitution
- Shake the bottle to loosen powder
- Add boiled and cooled water to the dry powder of the bottle
- Suspension should be stored in a cool and dry place, preferably in refrigerator
