Description
- Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
- Exerts a bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
- Used for the treatment of infections caused by penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Effective against Gram positive and Gram negative micro-organisms
- Active against mycoplasmas and chlamydia
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Binds to the 50S subunit or 70S ribosome
- Absorption is diminished by the presence of food
- Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids
- Crosses the placenta and is excreted in the milk
