Description
- Mycin belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics.
- Exerts bacteriostatic or bactericidal action by interfering with ribosomal protein synthesis.
- Used for treating infections caused by penicillinase-producing staphylococci.
- Effective against various micro-organisms including Gram (+)ve & Gram (-)ve bacteria, mycoplasmas, and chlamydia.
Indications
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Lower respiratory tract infections
- Ear infections
- Eye infections
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Gastrointestinal tract infections
- Prophylaxis
- Other infections like osteomyelitis, diphtheria, scarlet fever, whooping cough
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms.
- Specific binding to 50S subunit or 70S ribosome in susceptible organisms.
- Active against Gram-positive and some Gram-negative bacteria, mycoplasmas, and chlamydia.
- Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids with some retention in the liver and spleen.
Dosage & Administration
- Adults & Children over 8 years: 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections.
- Dosage may be increased in severe cases.
- Different dosage recommendations for elderly, children aged 2 to 8 years, and infants.
Interaction
- May increase serum theophylline levels and potential theophylline toxicity in patients receiving high theophylline dosage.
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin.
Side Effects
- Rare allergic reactions, mild abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting.
- Discomfort usually subsides after a few days without reducing the dosage.
Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity or toxicity in human studies.
- Erythromycin crosses the placental barrier and is excreted in breast milk.
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with care in patients with impaired hepatic function.
Overdose Effects
- Discontinue in case of overdosage.
- Prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug, other appropriate measures should be instituted.
