Description

  • Belongs to macrolides group of antibiotics
  • Exerts bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
  • Effective against penicillinase producing staphylococci
  • Susceptible to various micro-organisms

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
  • Active against Grampositive and some Gram-negative bacteria
  • Specific binding to the 50S subunit or 70S ribosome
  • Widely distributed throughout body tissue and fluids

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult and Children over 8 years: 250-500 mg every six hours for mild to moderate infections
  • Elderly dosage recommendation
  • Children aged 2 to 8 years dosage
  • Infants and Children upto 2 years dosage

Interaction

  • Possible increase in serum theophylline levels and potential theophylline toxicity when used together

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin
