Description
- Belongs to the macrolides group of antibiotics
- Exerts bacteriostatic or bactericidal action
- Used for infections caused by penicillinase producing staphylococci
- Effective against Gram positive bacteria
- Effective against some Gram negative bacteria
- Effective against mycoplasmas and chlamydia
Pharmacology
- Inhibits microsomal protein synthesis in susceptible organisms
- Specific binding to the 50S subunit of ribosomes
- Active against many Gram positive bacteria
- Enters the cerebrospinal fluid
- Crosses the placenta and excreted in milk
Dosage & Administration
- 250-500 mg every six hours for adults and children over 8 years
- Elderly may be administered three times daily or twice daily
- 250 mg every six hours for children aged 2 to 8 years
- 500 mg in divided doses for infants and children up to 2 years
Interaction
- May increase serum theophylline levels
- Potential theophylline toxicity
- May require reduction of theophylline dose
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Erythromycin

Pregnancy & Lactation
- No evidence of teratogenicity or toxicity in humans

Overdose Effects
- Discontinue E-Lid in case of overdosage
- Prompt elimination of unabsorbed drug
- Not removed by peritoneal dialysis or haemodialysis

Reconstitution
- Shake the bottle to loosen powder
- Add boiled and cooled water to the dry powder
- Shake well after each water addition
- Keep the bottle tightly closed
- Store in a cool and dry place
- Unused portion should be discarded after 7 days
